My Style Journey
“For starters, my bigger interest in style began when I was in late elementary school. I used to receive trash bags full of hand-me-down clothes from a family friend, and it was always the best day ever — I would sift through the bags and bags of clothing from the best of the best at that time — Limited Too, Juicy Couture, and more.”
I have always enjoyed fashion and style for as long as I can remember. I’ve enjoyed getting dressed and putting outfits together from an early age!
My style journey has been filled with lots of twist and turns, but I finally feel like I have a grasp on what my personal style is. Want to hear more about how I’ve arrived here? Keep on reading.
For starters, my bigger interest in style began when I was in late elementary school. I used to receive trash bags full of hand-me-down clothes from a family friend, and it was always the best day ever — I would sift through the bags and bags of clothing from the best of the best at that time — Limited Too, Juicy Couture, and more. It was a ten year old’s dream!
Fast forward to middle school, my friends and I would go shopping on the weekends for fun. Those were the days of graphic tees and low rise flare jeans. In high school, I loved to dress up — I wore dresses and skirts very often, and though my style preferences have changed, I always loved going to school in a nice outfit. I even was voted ‘Best Dressed’ in high school.
At this point, and into my college days, I would describe my style as ‘preppy’ as this was popular at the time. I loved Ralph Lauren, plaid, collared shirts, J.Crew, and bright colors. I owned a Lily Pulitzer dress and wore Jack Rogers. It was really stylish at the time, and especially among the sorority/greek scene.
“I have found such peace with LESS, which is a far cry from my college days when my roommates so graciously gave me the spare room in our basement to use as a makeshift closet because I filled mine up completely.”
As time went on, I realized that I really didn’t love the ‘preppy’ look anymore. I began to transition to a phase where I was all about fashion trends. I loved researching trends (I still do) and wearing whatever was most fashionable at any given time. However, if you are like-minded, you probably quickly realize that having the most fashionable pieces ALL the time is both tiring and quite expensive. This idea began my shift to where my style is today.
Now, I would describe my style as minimal, bohemian-chic. It is a bit complicated, but I find myself constantly drawn to flowy, floral frocks and chic pieces, like blazers. More importantly, I have found such peace with LESS, which is a far cry from my college days when my roommates so graciously gave me the spare room in our basement to use as a makeshift closet because I filled mine up completely.
Overall, my style has been many different things, but today I am pleased with being able to find a combination of style, and also minimalism and being happier with less.
I hope you all found this post interesting — and I’m sure you have a similar story with many twists and turns to arriving at your true personal style. I am happy to have found the best reflection of myself through style!
