Starting a low-buy year

Have you ever felt the pressure of consumerism?

With social media and the latest trends in marketing, we can be left to feel as though we never have enough, and there is always something else we need to add to be happy. In order to combat these feelings, I have enacted a low-buy year! If you’re looking to minimize your wardrobe this year and have a simpler mindset when it comes to your wardrobe, maybe this challenge is for you, too.

A low-buy year (or any set period of time) is a mindset of purchasing minimally throughout the year. Here are a few parameters I am putting on my low-buy year — this will not only simplify but also allow me to make strides towards a more sustainable wardrobe (much of my low-buy challenge was inspired by Signe from Use Less)

  1. Secondhand or thrift purchases are allowed, and encouraged

  2. Replacing basics and necessities such as socks, underwear, and basic tees are allowed as needed

  3. If you must shop, try to do so at an ethical retailer

In her Low-Buy challenge, Signe also mentioned some grey areas, which I agree with and plan to implement — receiving gifts or gift cards are not against the rules of this challenge — and she encouraged doing what is best for you personally, no matter what. I agree entirely, because personal style is such an individual journey; I feel confident in where my capsule wardrobe is, but not being too strict on myself will be key. Having a few fresh pieces here and there help keep a minimal wardrobe exciting.

Of course, throughout this challenge, there is grace in all of it — because it can be difficult to avoid the pressures of fast fashion and consumerism! However, this will not only help to keep the clutter of my wardrobe down, it will help me to really hone in on What I feel is missing from my wardrobe — and what key staple items would be great additions to my closet. Not to mention, saving money and a reminder that less is definitely more!

What are your thoughts on this mindset challenge? I’d love to hear!
