Layering Essentials for Fall/Winter
The snowstorm we experienced this year got me inspired to really enjoy my favorite fall/winter pieces just a bit longer before I look to spring — my true favorite season. However, I’m always so excited when the weather turns cooler and it’s time to break out my favorite cool weather pieces. Putting together layered looks is also perfect if you live in a climate where the warmer seasons last longer, or it doesn’t get all that cold, like here in Texas — it can be cool in the mornings, yet warm and sunny by mid day, even in the coldest of months. Or 80 degrees on any given ‘winter’ day. Having layers helps to adapt to the changing temperatures outside. They key to creating the ultimate ensemble in these cooler months? Mastering the art of layering.
Here is the line-up for my must-have layers, as well as a few tips to ensure your layering looks stylish, seamless, and not frumpy or bulky.
Tops:
I like having a variation of tops that can serve as a base layer - these are all thinner materials but fit nicely under some of the other layers to add on top. I keep a turtleneck, henley, distressed tee, and a tank top to serve all temperatures. I prefer to keep these in neutral tones, such as black, cream, grey, etc. I have most of these represented in multiple colors, too — once I found basics I love, I like to have multiple options.
Dresses:
White Maxi Dress - Free People
Corduroy Jumpsuit - Urban Outfitters
Mini Sweater Dress — Banana Republic
I am almost always in a dress if I’m not in my loungewear, so dresses serve as an integral part of my layering wardrobe. I love dresses underneath unique jackets, but I also layer a long sleeve tee under short sleeve or tank dresses from the summer to serve as a transitional outfit. I love when pieces can serve me in my year round wardrobe.
Jackets/Outerwear
Of course, my favorite part of layered looks is the jackets and outwear component. I have come to realize, despite living in a warm climate, that I really love jackets and outerwear. Some of my favorites include a suede Moto jacket, a classic plaid blazer — and this season, I am really enjoying the sweater vest trend.
Accessories:
Bandana
Layered Jewelry
Lastly, I love using accessories for a final layered touch. Hats, particularly my wide-brim hat and beanies make a big appearance in these months for me; I also love bandanas, and layered jewelry as well.
