Tips for shopping secondhand

If you are just begininning your sustainable fashion journey, it can be quite overwhelming. One element that can be quite difficult to master - the art of secondhand shopping. I know I struggled to get into secondhand shopping; here are a three tips and encouragements that might help you get more comfortable with this process!

  1. Be clear with what you are looking for. I often keep a checklist of items that I would love to incorporate into my wardrobe. Sometimes, it can be overwhelming when thrift shopping, and there can be a tendency to need to purchase things, simply because they are available or at a great price. By sticking to what you are looking for, and being willing to walk away if you don’t find it, you’ll keep from filling up your closet or home with things you won’t actually wear or enjoy.

  2. You don’t have to shop at Goodwill, the Salvation Army, or consignment shops. I know my hometown didn’t have great options when it came to secondhand shopping - so I didn’t really get into it in that phase of life. However, I found great success shopping on Poshmark, eBay, and even Etsy to find unique vintage finds. It is also easy to look for specific items or brands this way.

  3. Be willing to make adjustments to thrifted pieces. Sometimes, you might find something that isn’t quite the right fit or might need some adjustments. Don’t be afraid to get an item tailored to fit you better. Other options can be distressing a piece yourself, cropping jeans to fit you properly, or adding embellishments to fit your personal style best.

I hope these tips were helpful in encouraging you in your thrifting process!
