Tips for Making Sustainable Shopping Decisions
As I have begun trying to improve my sustainable habits, especially when it comes to my home + wardrobe, I have found several tools and methods to improve my decision-making. If you are looking for ways to improve, too — I hope you find these tips helpful!
EWG Skin Deep. This one has been particularly beneficial as I have tried to switch to more non-toxic products in my home — ranging from beauty to cleaning and more. This app provides ratings for products, as well as a breakdown of all the ingredients so you can better understand and evaluate a product’s level of toxicity. They also have a grouping of products that are ‘EWG Verified’, which are typically the best/cleanest — which I like to shop from!
Sustainable App. This one is my favorite for buying sustainable apparel. They also have a weekly email that breaks down popular retailers and gives you a background on their sustainability. It is quite eye-opening and convicting, ranking retailers on their commitment to eliminating animal cruelty, fair wages for workers, and the quality of products they use.
Think Dirty. Similar to EWG, this app is a resource that is helpful in making decisions about the products I purchase. It breaks down the ingredients and also provides a rating on the product’s overall ‘clean’ factor.
Checking the Corporate Responsibility section on retailer’s websites. This is not a well-known fact, but each company likely has a Corporate Responsibility page where they detail their stance and commitment to sustainability. I like to read over these pages to see where they stand, as well as the goals they have set to do better in the future.
I’d love to hear any other resources that you use to make ethical and sustainable choices when it comes to shopping!
